Along with Go Seigen 5 dan (at the time) he developed the "New Fuseki" (Shin-fuseki).

In 1938 Kitani played a memorial retirement game with Honinbo Shusai Meijin, which was immortalized by Nobel Prize winner Kawabata Yasunari in the novel "The Master of Go".
Later he taught at the Kitani dojo and was the teacher of many great players like Cho Chikun and Kobayashi Koichi.
His own daughter Reiko (1939–1996) reached 6 dan and won the All-Japan Women's Championship several times, and married one of his best students, Koichi Kobayashi.

(;B[qd]C[The game we are discussing in this episode was played in 1958. Kitani developed his style over the years and started playing very territorial.

This game is between Kitani and another master: Sakata Eio, nicknamed "the razor" for his razorsharp reading skills. ]
